Measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) are serious diseases that prior to vaccines were very common, especially among children. The measles virus is more dangerous than the others and can cause rashes, cough, runny nose, eye irritation, and fever. In more serious cases, it can lead to ear infection, pneumonia, seizures/convulsions (jerking and staring), brain damage, and death. The mumps virus causes a low-grade fever, headaches, fatigue, muscle pain, loss of appetite, and swollen glands and in certain circumstances can lead to deafness, meningitis (infection of the brain and spinal cord covering), painful swelling of the testicles or ovaries, and sterility. The rubella virus typically lasts between 48 and 72 hours and causes rashes, arthritis/joint pain, and mild fever and inflammation of the brain in severe cases. These diseases spread from person to person through the air.
The MMR vaccine is generally admitted to children, who receive two doses of the MMR vaccine. The first MMR vaccine dose is usually administered at 12-15 months old, with the second dose typically being administered at the age of 4-5 years old.
